The New World Snubbed by Academy (expectedly)
Lets start with best actor, its not a bad selection but Eric Bana deserved a nomination. I like David Strathairn as much as the next guy, but his performance really wasn't amazing (I'd call it good), mostly he is just reenacting newscasts.
Best actress, Q'Orianka Kilcher gave EASILY the best performance by an actress this year. Evidently the academy didnt want to admit that they should all be taking acting lessons from a 14 year old. Is there some kind of rule that Judi Dench has to be nominated for something every year?
Supporting Actor, evidently embarrassed for forgetting about him last year the academy gives Paul Giamatti an apology nomination for his tiny and unmemorable role in Cinderella Man. Whatever, I like the guy.
Directing, Capote and Good Night and Good Luck? Really? I can at least give Clooney credit for making some interesting choices (even if they didn't all work out), I can't say the same for Bennet Miller (even though I liked Capote more than GNGL). No room for The New World, The Constant Gardener, Match Point?
The New World racked up its only nomination in the Cinematography category, and was ignored for Art Direction, and Costume Design. Just couldn't compete with Harry Potter, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and King Kong I guess.
Munich gets noms for Picture, Directing, Editing and Music, but couldn't get into cinematography ahead of Batman Begins or Memoirs of a Geisha. Mike, am I missing something here?
Despite all this, relative to past years the academy did a pretty decent job. Heres to hoping "Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp" comes away with a statuette.

While Isaac was pondering the age gap between himself and Ms. Kilcher, and cursing his eighteenth birthday, he failed to work himself into a proper tizzy over the harshly neglected Grizzly Man. My tizzy supplants his.
I had that tizzy weeks ago, when I heard that Grizzly Man did not even make the first round nominated group out of which the actual nominees are chosen.
Also, the two best musical scores of the year were for Grizzly Man and The New World, neither of which was given a nomination in that category. There are just too many tizzies to be had, its a good thing we split them up between us.
I would say Ralph Fiennes deserved a nomination over Bana. He really nailed the exact combination of English reserve and capacity for action that that role called for. Without him it wouldn't have been nearly as good a film. Although neither he nor Strathairn was as good as Hoffman or Ledger so it doesn't really matter; either one is really just a tip of the hat to their careers. Since Fiennes has already had a couple nominations, I don't begrudge Strathiarn his day in the Golden sun.
Another snub that people are talking about is Robin Wright Penn in Nine Lives. I haven't even seen the movie but everyone says she's amazing and it's criminal she didn't get a nomination. Has anyone seen it?
How cinematographers skipped over Constant Gardener and Sin City I'll never figure out. Don't they know that sucking up to Spielberg doesn't work in an anonymous voting system?
Cinematography is a weird one for Sin City since it was all shot in front of a green screen, but it certainly deserved nominations for make-up, special effects, and art direction.
I laughed at your Spielberg joke then remembered that Spielberg's films weren't nominated for cinematography.
The Sin City thing is tricky. I still think that the way in which the action was filmed was integral to its success.
As for the Spielberg thing, well, let's just pretend I said Clooney and never speak of it again.
Tie Breaker: Film to get the most oscars and how many.
By way of example: Star Wars Episode III, 14.
