Here's my thought: six peoples (Aaron, Jasmime, Seb, Jody, Mike, Isaac). $10 per, which means we could spread the prize money a couple different ways: a big honking group of DVDs for the winner, or (my preference) a $40-ish DVD for first place and a $20-ish one for second place, with the caveat that second place DVD cannot be awarded to the same household as first place.
If you all were waiting for the right moment to throw out suggestions for the DVDs, wait no longer. Instead, uh, do it. Now.
first prize: -Evil Dead 2 Book of the Dead Limited Edition -Rashoman, Ran, or Seven Samurai Criterion Collection -F for Fake Criterion Collection -Sullivan's Travels Criterion (this gets my vote, loaded with goodies) -The Last Temptation of Christ Criterion -Hard Boiled Criterion
random second prize ideas: -The Grapes of Wrath -The Wild Bunch Original Director's Cut -On the Waterfront -Die Hard Special Edition -Apocalypse Now
All right, I'm tired. Its not easy searching for dvd's that fit our set prices and that (to the best of my knowledge) none of us already own.
Not to confuse things even more, but there's also the just-released $60 Sam Peckinpah set...Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett, Cable Hogue, Ride the High Country. That one would prob. be a winner-take-all deal unless we upped the entry fee.
I vote for that, with no second prize if need be. However Amazon has it listed at 45 bucks, so its possible we could do that and have a really cheap second prize, like, say, Man with the Screaming Brain (which is listed at $18 on amazon, but i recently saw it at best buy for $10).
I don't imagine I'll have any takers for Screaming Brain, but I still think there are plenty of DVDs in the 10-15 dollar range that are worthwhile.
Hey all, just wondering if I could get in on the oscar pool this year. While watching the events unfold from the safety of my computer is all well and good, it would be nice to have a chance at the glorious dvd prize.
As I understand it, the nominees will be announced tomorrow. I think Friday should be the deadline for publishing your picks. Its seems like some of the fun is alreay gone with the SAG and DGA awards being announced, I mean at this point Ang Lee is a given for best director.
The LA people should do paper ballots. Then, when all ballots are turned in, Alrik and Isaac post theirs here. This way there is less looking at other people's picks before making your own.

that's not very tracendental...
what would you call it? nihilistic?
Not to be completely off-topic or anything, but can we get some Oscar pool info up here? ie, who is in, and what are we losing?

Fine with me. Anybody wanna veto Alrik's involvement?
Does no no vote mean I can be in the pool? if so:
no prob with Alrik.
I vote for 1st prize:
Last temptation, Rashoman, Ran,
2nd:
on the waterfront, apocolypse now...
in that order..
What about criterion Jules and Jim?
We're working with $70 now, so how are we dividing it?
If my opinion matters I vote for the Sam Peckinpah set, that would be pretty sweet, and it looks like theres going to be enough dough...
OK, people. A peckinpah collection without his best film, Bring Me the Head, is no collection at all.
I vote for:
Last Temptation (sure to please all)
Jules and Jim
Die Hard special ed would keep the primary loser very cozy at night.
here here
works for me.
