Flesh + Blood = fascinating movie

Long before Paul Verhoeven established himself in the mainstream with such enjoyable action/sci fi romps as RoboCop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers he made a little film that'll kick your ass called Flesh + Blood. Just saw it this weekend, its a slight mind blower. On the surface its a fairytale--medieval times, lord hires mercenaries to fight battle, cheats them, they kidnap princess that his son is set to marry, prince goes off to rescue her. Verhoeven's vision, though, contains a bit more rape and murder than your typical fairytale. He brings a dark realism to the tale and does not shy away from any of the details, definitely justifying the title. That Verhoeven is an interesting fella, I may hafta post a blog analyzing his career when I have a little more time.
