I'd like to thank the Academy
For once again proving that the easiest way to win an Oscar pool is to figure out which movie is going to win the most awards, and then selecting that film's nominees in all the "little" categories (e.g., cinematography, art direction...). I momentarily forgot my own rule when I chose House of Flying Daggers over Aviator, but that was mostly wishcasting, I guess. Plus I got lucky with Original Score, which was a wild-ass guess that turned out right.
Aaron's right - picking the Oscars is mostly a game of cynicism, but at least you can get worked up over your choices to the point where you don't have to think quite as much about the injustice of it all.
As for the actual ceremony, it was pretty blah - even more so than usual. I was glad to see Payne and Taylor and Kaufman walk away with awards; they were well deserved. MDB was a surprise; we were all totally off the mark on that one. I guess I'm surprised, but I shouldn't be. Oh well.
So what's the front runner for next year - Jarhead? The New World? Che? Son of the Mask?

I came in second of five in my apartment. I voted too much with my heart. MDB surprised me, too, until I remember that Mystic River should have won last year but that goddamned barefooted wookie Jackson had to finally win since his beloved Trilogy was finally over -- thus robbing Eastwood of some deserved awards.
As for Blanchett in Supporting - it was her year since she has lost a few times... and I thought for sure it was gonna be Marty's year since he has never fucking won with all his masterworks... oh well.
I, too, was happy to see Kaufman finally win, and Payne/Taylor win. I had my hopes up that Foxx would have won both of this awards just cuz everyone would have shit their pants... but alas, no.
Did anyone else enjoy Chris Rock as the host? I thought he was great. And I love Penn.... but why was he all defensive for Jude Law?
ok.. I'll shut up.
MDB was a shocker, but in the best way possible, because it was my favorite movie of the year. I wanted to see Marty win though, but his day is yet to come I suppose. And Chris Rock worked as a host but he wasn't as funny as he could have been, although the Jude Law bit was hilarious. Being a Banderas fan you'd think I'd love to see him perform but I really think the composer of the song did a better job singing the song then he did. Anyways, I thought it was a overall good show, its sad to see Scorsese lose again though....
We we're talking about Chris Rock's job as host in my stand up class today--how he didn't do that well with the crowd. I mentioned that it was because he scares them b/c when he makes fun of Jude Law, he doesn't follow it up with, "You know I love you Jude," the way that hosts like Billy Crystal and Steve Martin would. To me though, that made his set twice as funny, I wasn't just laughing at his jokes but also I was laughing at the crowd not knowing how to handle his jokes.
In summation, Sean Penn...what an ass.
